Opened in 1925 by former prizefighter Jimmy Bernstein, the Formosa Cafe sits at 7156 Santa Monica Blvd. in West Hollywood, right across from what was once the United Artists studio lot. Its prime location made it a magnet for stars like Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Frank Sinatra, who famously drowned his Ava Gardner sorrows here in the ’50s. The cafe has appeared in L.A. Confidential, Swingers, Nurse Betty, Euphoria, and more, cementing its legacy as a real-life and on-screen Hollywood icon.
