Opened in 1956 as Romeo’s Times Square, this iconic diner at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue became Ram’s in the early 1960s before adopting its now-famous name, Johnie’s. Designed by architects Louis Armét and Eldon Davis—pioneers of Space Age Googie architecture, the building stands as a quintessential example of the futuristic, eye-catching style that defined mid-century Los Angeles. Johnie’s has also earned fame on screen, appearing in films like Volcano, The Big Lebowski, American History X, and Tom Petty’s 1999 music video for “Swingin’.”
