This iconic mid-century travel poster captures San Francisco's vibrant energy through the lens of renowned artist Dong Kingman. Originally commissioned by American Airlines, this piece is a premier example of 1960s commercial art, blending bold watercolors with the era's adventurous jet-age spirit. Created in a watercolor style, this original vintage travel poster for the San Francisco Bay area features scenes that have made the city a favorite travel destination in central California. The famous cable cars descend toward the water and the bay in the top vignette. Below the arches of the Golden Gate Bridge, the water and boats pass beneath. Widely regarded as one of America's leading watercolor masters, Dong Kingman was a pioneer of the "California Style" school of painting. Born in Oakland, California, he developed a unique artistic voice during his youth in Hong Kong, where he studied traditional Chinese calligraphy and watercolor before returning to the Bay Area in 1929. This San Francisco American Airlines poster is an original vintage poster; it is not a reproduction. It is conservation-mounted and linen-backed to preserve and protect it, and it is in excellent condition. |
