This exquisite original travel poster, designed by the acclaimed French artist Jeanne Poye Maillard, was commissioned by the French Northern Railway (Chemin de Fer du Nord) to entice holidaymakers to the picturesque port city of Calais. Rendered in lush, vivid colors and professionally linen-backed, the poster depicts an inviting seaside vista characteristic of the early- to mid-20th-century golden age of rail travel. The Embroidery Factories of Calais. Calais is famous well beyond its port—for more than a century, it has been a global center for embroidery and lace-making. Starting in the early 1800s, British inventors brought mechanical lace-making machines (notably the Leavers machine) to Calais to avoid industrial restrictions at home. This technological advance turned Calais into the central hub of the lace and embroidery industry. The artistry and precision of the Calais factory workers established French lace as the international standard, adorning haute couture garments for houses like Chanel and Dior. Jeanne Poye Maillard was a French graphic artist known for her travel and promotional posters from the early to mid-20th century. Maillard's works feature striking Art Deco design, elegant figures, and a sharp sense of color harmony, making her one of the standout female poster artists of her time. Her pieces, commissioned by major transportation companies, tourism boards, and regional councils, have become prized collectibles, celebrated for their artistic quality and their vivid depiction of French leisure culture. The bold typography and Art Deco style are signature features, skillfully balanced with detailed illustrations. The goal was to evoke both luxury and accessibility—hallmarks of the French railway promotional art of this era. Suggested Date: Based on the artistic style and travel poster trends, this work most likely dates from the late 1920s to the early 1930s—a period when railway companies heavily promoted Northern France’s coastal resorts. The Compagnie du chemin de fer du Nord was a French company that operated the railway network in northern France from 1845 to 1938. It was established on September 20, 1845, by banker James de Rothschild and his associates, under the name of Compagnie du chemin de fer du Nord. It is one of the main components of the SNCF, created in 1938. A accompanies each poster. We use proper, sturdy packaging to ensure safe delivery.
