A powerful and historically significant original lithograph from World War I, designed by the celebrated French caricaturist and illustrator Georges Goursat, better known by his pseudonym SEM. Created in 1918 for the Banque Nationale de Crédit, the poster urged the French citizenry to subscribe to the National Loan to fund the final push for victory. The Soldiers of 1918: The foreground features the "Poilus" (the informal term for French WWI infantrymen) in their iconic Horizon Blue uniforms. They are depicted in mid-March, weary yet resolute, weighed down by heavy packs and rifles. Their faces reflect the grim reality of the trenches, yet their forward momentum is undeniable. The Ghosts of Grandeur: Emerging from the background mist, SEM reveals the spectral figures of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic armies. These ghostly ancestors march alongside modern soldiers, symbolizing that the spirit of French military "triumph" is an eternal flame passed down through generations. The Arc de Triomphe: Towering over the scene is the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
