It was created by American artist George Illian (1894–1932) to encourage American citizens to conserve food for war-torn European allies. Historical Significance: Features Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier (1851–1926), the Archbishop of Malines and a prominent figure in the Belgian resistance during the German occupation in World War I.
