May 19–June 10, 1984 Return Gallery, Taos, New Mexico Created in 1984, this one-of-a-kind original painting by Dennis Hopper is an early study developed in preparation for his exhibition at Return Gallery in Taos, New Mexico. The exhibition coincided with a turbulent period in Hopper’s life and was ultimately missed by the artist due to his entry into rehabilitation, resulting in the body of work being largely overlooked at the time. The painting’s bold green palette and totemic, centrally composed imagery reflect Hopper’s mythic narrative involving three characters and one imagined destination: Maximilian, Chico, Ra, and El Dorado. Hopper described the story succinctly: Chico works for Maximilian; Maximilian sends Chico in search of El Dorado; Ra stands on the sidelines, calling out encouragement. Hopper later referred to this group of works as the “Nut House Green” paintings. This painting was not included in the 1984 Return Gallery exhibition and exists as a singular developmental work created as Hopper refined the final compositions that were ultimately shown. As such, it is a unique, one-of-a-kind original painting, never editioned, never exhibited, and offered publicly for the first time. The work is accompanied by an original color poster from the 1984 Return Gallery exhibition and a certificate of authenticity signed by David Hopper (which includes a reproduction of a signed note Dennis wrote to David on the verso), who co-ran the Return Gallery with Dennis Hopper and served as curator of the 1984 exhibition. |
