Own a piece of American railroad history with this rare original advertisement poster for Amtrak's iconic "Desert Wind" service. The poster features vibrant, classic artwork promoting the passenger train route that connected Los Angeles, CA, to Las Vegas, NV, and Ogden, UT, before continuing to Chicago via the California Zephyr. The Desert Wind ran from 1979 until its discontinuation in 1997, leaving Las Vegas without scheduled Amtrak service ever since. The Desert Wind was a long-distance Amtrak passenger train that ran from October 28, 1979, to May 10, 1997, connecting Los Angeles and Chicago via Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Pre-Amtrak: Regular passenger rail service to Las Vegas ended in May 1971 when Amtrak chose not to include the Union Pacific Railroad's "City of Los Angeles" route in its network. There were a few short-lived attempts to restore service in the 1970s, including the "Las Vegas Limited" in 1976. The route was eventually integrated with the California Zephyr and Pioneer trains, with all three operating as one large train between Chicago and Salt Lake City (or Denver at one point). In Salt Lake City, the train was split, with the California Zephyr continuing to Oakland/San Francisco, the Pioneer heading to Seattle, and the Desert Wind traveling south to Los Angeles.
