Pierre Bonnard, another of the important post-impressionist painters who considered the crossover into posters as a natural extension of their artistic talents, designed two posters for the conservative French newspaper Le Figaro. In this poster, Bonnard depicts a scene from daily life, the morning ritual of a couple reading the newspaper. It is Bonnard's fascination with everyday scenes reflected in both his paintings and lithographs that gave rise to the term Intimisme. This term originated in the 1890s to describe the highly cropped, heavily patterned, close-in views of family and friends created by Bonnard and his fellow Nabis painters. Signed in the stone, his signature is almost completely concealed as it becomes incorporated into the patterning of the back of the cane chair.
