| Additional Information: | This poster advertises the 1964 Semana Santa (Holy Week), which takes place annually in Seville, Spain. One of the most important events taking place in the city, the Semana Santa is celebrated during the week leading up to Easter. Depicted in this poster is the the procession of pasos which are floats of life-like wooden sculptures of individual scenes of the events of the Passion, or images of the Virgin Mary showing grief for the torture and killing of her Son. Here we see the silhouette of Christ's leg nailed to the Cross with the procession-goers in traditional costumes. Every year a poster is issued for this event; we have found images of similar posters dating back to 1946, and all feature a very similar scene. |
