Tom Chantrell

Tom Chantrell (1916- 2001)
Tom Chantrell is perhaps the most famous British poster artist.  In 1938 he designed his first movie poster for The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse. He went on to design over 7,000 film posters including Star Wars, The King and I, The Sound of Music, Prisoners of the Lost Universe, Zulu Dawn and The Land That Time Forgot.  Chantrell is said to have rarely watched any of the films and was able to design his posters from a synopsis and stills. He would often get his friends and family to pose for reference snapshots.
