TAZ x ANDERSON .PAAK
The Real Story

by Pierre Vudrag on Thursday, June 15, 2017

Let’s make it clear from the outset, Jim Evans, aka TAZ is a huge fan of Anderson .Paak. First hearing him on the Compton soundtrack, then discovering Venice, and finally falling in love with his opus, Malibu. Evans considers Anderson a musical genius that has successfully channeled the best of soul, funk, hip hop, and jazz from the last four decades, into a modern musical stew.

When Adrian Miller, Anderson’s manager, contacted Eddie Donaldson, to grab Jim for an Anderson poster gig, it was an instant creative love fest. A new House Of Blues was opening in Anaheim, and Anderson and his Free Nationals band was one of the featured openers. For the art, Adrian wanted something much different than Anderson’s album art and previous promotional material. He described it as a Fillmore style poster, something steeped in tradition, and stylistically going back to Jim’s beginning, as an underground artist in 60’s San Francisco.

Anderson headshots were sent over, and the poster began to take shape. It ultimately became a portrait of Anderson wrapped in a retro look, and imbued with symbols and metaphoric design forms, all evoking the inspirations that Anderson uses in his music.

Anderson was impressed enough with the result that he agreed to personally sign an edition of 50, which are also signed and numbered by TAZ. Limited Runs, in their exclusive relationship with TAZ, will be making these unique pieces available on a first come, first served basis.
