Limited Runs, the source for Original and Vintage Posters, Print Art and Photography has debut and will tour the Metronome Jazz Fine Art Photography Collection in select cities.

The array of Jazz photos included in the collection were accrued directly from the archives of Metronome, one of the publishing world’s late great music magazines. The Limited Runs Collection features some of Jazz’s biggest and most influential musicians who pioneered Jazz into an art form, creating a uniquely American style that captured the world’s attention. Featured in the Collection are powerhouse icons like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, and Dave Brubeck, just to name a few.

Duke Ellington. “Beyond Category”. Legendary composer, pianist and bandleader. Photographer Maurice Seymour. Circa 1935. Metronome Jazz Collection.

Metronome published its first issue in 1881 and quickly became the premier music magazine of its day. At the start of the Swing era, Metronome shifted its editorial coverage to primarily Jazz music, and continued to cover the genre until public taste switched to the new rock n’ roll sound, forcing Metronome to eventually close its doors in 1961.

Charlie Parker. “Bird”. Legendary jazz saxophonist and composer, nicknamed “Bird” and “Yardbird” helped to lead the Be-bop movement died tragically in 1955 at the age of 34. Photo taken on January 17, 1946 during rehearsal for a performance in Denver. Metronome Jazz Collection.

Limited Runs’ founder, Pierre Vudrag, in conjunction with Getty Images (who houses the collection), has spent the past two years researching Metronome’s vast photographic archives, which for the most part have been untouched for over half a century. “Sifting through the old file cabinets,” said Vudrag, “was like embarking on an archeological dig. They were the original metal cabinets Metronome used to house the photos when they were still in business.” Vudrag added: “I was finding photographs that haven’t been seen since they were first published, if they were published at all. Many photos were submitted to the magazine at the time, but the editors only choose certain images for publication. The rest were filed away, many into obscurity.”

John Coltrane. “A Love Supreme”. Taken in 1959 during a performance in West Germany by photographer Michael Montfort. Metronome Jazz Collection.

Thelonious Monk. “Monk in Blue Hue”. One of the greatest jazz musicians of all time photograph circa 1960 during a live performance. Metronome Jazz Collection.

Many collectors consider Metronome Jazz’s foremost magazine, and hunt for past issues, some of which can be found in places like eBay and other collectible shops. The Metronome Jazz Collection of contemporary fine art prints, however, is exclusively available for sale through Limited Runs.

Billie Holiday. “Performs in New York City at the Downbeat club, February 1948”. Metronome Jazz Collection.

Lester Young. “Lester Leaps In”. Photograph taken circa 1944. Metronome Jazz Collection.

This Photo appeared in Metronome Magazine in the September, 1942 issue on page 10, in a news piece that read “Lester and Lee Young make their eastern debut with their new band at Café Society early this month,” in the April, 1947 issue on page 48, in an article entitled, “Jazz In Kansas City” and in the February, 1949 issue on page 18, in an article entitled, “Influences Of The Year.”
