Vintage Travel Posters: Trains

by Pierre Vudrag on Wednesday, March 25, 2015

Vintage advertising posters often evoke feelings of nostalgia and either reminds us of either our childhood or helps transports us to another time and place.  A time and place that we wished we could have visited.  Here are some transportation posters that help evoke some of those long lost places.

Laffly, Le Rapide Des Camions
Poster Printed: 1980s
Artwork Created: 1930s
This poster is from a second printing of the classic deco poster created by Roggero in the 1930s. Laffly was a French manufacturer of trucks and utility vehicles which was founded in 1849 and remained in business until the early 1950s. The company was best known for their firetrucks, but also produced a range of military vehicles in the decade that preceeded the Second World War. In this poster, Laffly is advertising the speed and effectiveness of their trucks – le “rapide des camions” (the fast trucks) is definately an appropriate mention for something that drives faster than trains!

Amtrak-Northwest
“Amtrak…Takes You Clear Across America” is the caption of this poster which was designed by artist David Klein and released in 1971.
The use of mountains and nature invokes the feeling that by riding the train you will get to see America up close, something that you can’t do from the air.

Orient-Express / Venice (St. Marks)
Although printed in 1992 by artist Pierre Fix-Masseau, this french poster has a retro feel which evokes a romantic period of traveling across Europe by train.

American Railway Express
This U.S. poster printed by Carey & Sons was designed by artist Robert E. Lee and released in 1924.
The history of rail travel – in the United States and elsewhere – is filled with tales of romance and adventure. This poster, printed in December 1924 at the very beginning of the Art Deco period, is unusual for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is its horizontality, its typography (which seems to have been hand-drawn) and the magnificent coloration of its subjects and its broad expanses. An exceptional poster, not seen previously.

Festiniog Railway In The Centenary Year Of Passenger Services 1965
