In the design studios at Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, and AMC, gifted artists worked, fingers smudged a thousand hues from chalk and pastels, colored pencils lining their desks like graphite rainbows. Not a computer or Photoshop program to be found. These artists pushed further, building improbable, futuristic renderings of Pontiacs, Plymouths, Cadillacs, Oldsmobiles, Monte Carlos, Mercurys, Ford Fairlanes, Ford Mustangs, Firebirds, and Dodges. These cars, fantasies on four wheels, would never see assembly lines or find drivers gazing through their windshields; they were too wonderfully weird, too superbly strange for the more conservative minds running the major auto companies.
Their names are unknown to many, because these inspired outliers worked under the auspices of their employers. Security was tight at the car companies, and these wonderful works of art were never meant for public eyeballs and were either destroyed upon completion or locked away in secured vaults never to be seen again. Until now…
