The poster features a color-foto of the United States Capitol Dome in springtime. The dome is one of the best-known landmarks in the U.S. Made of iron, this architectural wonder is beautifully pictured nestled amongst the trees and shrubs of the Capitol's grounds. The grounds were designed by Frederick Olmstead, a pioneer in the development of American public parks. The plantings were specifically placed to showcase the Capitol's architectural features.
Historically, Washington, DC is a special place for TWA as well. In April, 1944, Howard Hughes and TWA President Jack Frye piloted one of the company's new Lockheed Constellations from Burbank, California, to Washington, DC. The trip took 6 hours 57 minutes, setting a new cross-country speed record.
The "Along the Way of TWA..." posters were printed in two sizes, this being the smaller size and was probably intended for distribution to travel and booking agents. In addition, it was printed as a postcard and distributed in flight. The design would be reformatted with added text for print ads. This use of a standardized design strategy, the incorporation of photography as the dominant image, and more targeted distribution reflects the changes in the graphic design industry as printing technologies evolved and marketing grew more towards corporate branding. The "Along the Way" series was used throughout the 1950's with minor variations towards corporate branding. The "Along the Way" series was used throughout the 1950's with minor variations.
