Sedelmaier, A True Visionary Gives Chicago A Landmark Branding Campaign, In this rare 1927 original poster designed by Ivan Beard for Chicago's North Shore Line, we see the warm inviting glow from the stained glass window against the dark winter night. Going Home Christmas? Perhaps a reminder to the many sailors at the Great Lakes Naval Station or the to the soldiers stationed at Fort Sheridan that the North Shore line is their ticket home for the holidays.

During the 1920's, to go anywhere between Chicago and Milwaukee, you took the North Shore Line. This interurban railroad was the fastest of its kind, thrived on innovation, and set the standard for rail comfort in the United States.

Owned by Samuel Insull and managed by Britton Budd, these visionaries solidly invested in programs that modernized, consolidated and publicized their holdings. Their poster campaign initiated in 1921 was no exception. Employing some of the finest local artist, the advertising campaign used bold graphics and colorful designs to entice daily commuters to also use their light rail system to enjoy city parks and museums, or to explore the surrounding North Shore destinations, Wisconsin resorts, and bucolic delights of the Chicago suburbs.

Overall, the poster campaign produced no more than 200 different posters with few survivors. Most of the surviving posters are in the hands of museums, libraries and private collectors.
