BENDA (Georges Kugelmann) Size: 46 x 61 3/4 in./117 x 157 cm Philippe G. Dreyfus, Paris A little-known graphic artist, Benda depicts Mistinguett here in all her coquettish glory, the wind playfully sweeping both her dress and bowed puppy into the air. As humorous as it is coy. Catching her in this whirling moment breezily communicates that she was a breath of fresh air, a fact to which all of those who were fortunate enough to see her perform uniformly agree. Acid free archival linen backed poster in excellent condition; ready to frame. Mistinguett was a French actress and singer whose real name was Jeanne Bourgeois. She began as a flower-seller in a restaurant in her home town, where she also sang popular ballads. When an acquaintance of hers made up the name Miss Tinguette, in reference to her bell-like voice, she adopted it, eventually joining the two words together. She made her debut as Mistinguett at the Casino de Paris in 1895, and also appeared at the Folies-Bergère, the Moulin Rouge and the Aristide Bruant’s famous Eldorado. As one commentator wrote: ‘Her risqué routines captivated Paris and she went on to become the most popular French entertainer of her time, and the highest paid female entertainer in the world. This Mistinguett is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed to preserve and protect the poster, and in excellent condition.
