La Bodinaire, a theater for plays and shadow shows also served as an art gallery and a place for literary talks. At the turn-of-the-century, it was a popular destination for Paris's upper class and the intelligentsia. The poster contains three vignettes which reference figures from Ibels work for Le Cafe Concert and La Theatre Libre, and includes the comedy classics of Harlequin and Pierrot. This is one of only a handful of posters by Ibels, an important member of the Nabis.

This plate is a small-format, lithographic reduction of the original poster. Printed in 1898 for the subscription series "Les Maitres de l'Affiche" it carries a blind stamp on the lower right corner which distinguishes the series. Published for the poster enthusiast of the time, this series of 256 color lithographic plates were delivered to monthly subscribers in packages of four during the Belle Epoque period in Paris (1895-1900).

The collection was reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format. The individual plates were issued as separate numbered sheets with the printer's name, Imprimerie Chaix, in the margin at the bottom left hand corner. They remain highly desirable and are increasingly hard to find.
