Making over 30 films in a career that spanned over 50 years, director,\u00a0Akira Kurosawa (March 23, 1910 \u2013 September 6, 1998) is often regarded as one of the most influential Japanese\u00a0filmmakers in the history of cinema. \u00a0Many of Kurosawa’s films have been remade including such classics as the Seven Samurai<\/a> (which was remade as American western, The Magnificent Seven<\/a>), \u00a0Yojimbo<\/a> (aka The Bodyguard) which was re-made by\u00a0Sergio Leone in\u00a0A Fistful of Dollars<\/a>. \u00a0Other classics include Rashomon<\/a>, Kagemusha<\/a>,\u00a0Throne of Blood<\/a>, The Hidden Fortress<\/a>\u00a0(major influences on George Lucas’ original\u00a0Star Wars<\/a>), and High and Low<\/a>. \u00a0Kurosawa’s original Japanese film posters (also known as the country of origins posters are extremely scarce\u00a0and very rare. \u00a0And perhaps\u00a0none more so than 1954’s\u00a0Seven Samurai<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Seven Samurai<\/a>\u00a0(Toho, 1954) Japanese B3 – This exceedingly rare country of origin Japanese B3 \u201croadshow\u201d style of the \u201cSeven Samurai,\u201d Kurosawa\u2019s most acclaimed film, is the hardest to find of any of his works. This is a rare opportunity to own a true piece of important cinematic history.<\/em><\/h4>\n

\n<\/span>This “Style A” poster of Kurosawa’s masterpiece includes a very powerful image of Tatsuya Nakadai dressed in full warlord gear. The film was produced by George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, who convinced 20th Century Fox to finance the film.<\/p>\n

Ran<\/a> (Toho, 1985) Japanese B2
\nKagemusha and Ran, are often considered to be among Kurosawa’s best works, uncharacteristically, Kurosawa often would select\u00a0Ran as his best film. \u00a0As Kurasawa’s film were shown around the world, here are some great examples of posters designed in foreign territories.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Throne of Blood<\/a> (Toho, 1957) Polish A1
\n<\/span>Designed by artist Wojciech Wenzel, this is the original 1957 release of the the film in Poland.<\/p>\n

\"\"Throne of Blood<\/a> (Toho, 1957) German A1
\nThrone of Blood was also known as “Castle Of The Spider’s Web”. This 1968 German poster, designed by Hans Hillmann,\u00a0has a fabulous image of Toshiro Mifune in Kurosawa’s adaptation of William\u00a0Shakespeare’s Macbeth set in medieval Japan.<\/p>\n

Before home videos hit the market,\u00a0Kurasawa’s films were often re-released into theatres. \u00a0Here are some great posters created for the 1976 releases of Sanjuro and Yojimbo, both of which feature\u00a0great images of star Toshiro Mifune.<\/p>\n
