From 1984-1989 (pre-T.A.Z. times), the artist Jim Evans diverged from his more esoteric influences and leaned towards the cultural role of the glorified and mega-gorgeous celebrity.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Marilyn Monroe by Jim Evans\" href=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kirk_marilyn1-sm1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3391\" title=\"Marilyn Monroe by Jim Evans\" src=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kirk_marilyn1-sm1-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kirk_marilyn1-sm1-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/kirk_marilyn1-sm1.jpg 516w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a>Using large-scale canvases, Evans rendered legendary celebrities of celluloid and rock n\u2019 roll fame in high-fructose paint, giving Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, Madonna, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dick Clark and their famous contemporaries within an expansive and multi-decade canon of pop culture, music, television, and film a pumped-up, renovated facade. In some cases, Evans worked directly with the subjects themselves, commissioned by record\u00a0labels and film studios, as well as Playboy magazine. The result? Five years\u2019 worth of celebrity pop portraits and Evans, thereby extending his personal milieu from rock musician, to surf artist, to sought-after graphic designer, to the inventor of the \u201cicon narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Sylvester Stallone with Jim &amp; Rocky Art\" href=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Jim-Rocky-sm.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3395\" title=\"Jim &amp; Sylvester Stallone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Jim-Rocky-sm-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Jim-Rocky-sm-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Jim-Rocky-sm.jpg 515w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a>Along with Richard Duardo, the ingenious printmaker referenced as \u201cthe Warhol of the West,\u201d Evans masterfully created these super stylized pop portraits, adorned with collages, scribbles, hand-drawn patterns and sweeping arcs. This version of visual, indelible \u201cmanifestos for the overstimulated\u201d (Evans\u2019s words) were like the emboldened stepsisters to Warhol\u2019s seminal portraits. Unlike Warhol, whom he describes as desirous of \u201cemptying out imagery,\u201d Evans was<br \/>\ncompelled to \u201cupgrade the image.\u201d And upgrade he did, using a fearlessly hued palette of cosmic fuchsia, fireball orange, otherworldly green, solar yellow, and extraterrestrial blues. Throughout his artistic career, Evans\u2019s artwork, whether it\u2019s original concert posters produced for Green Day, The Ramones, the Beastie Boys, a Tibetan Freedom tour, or these Neo-pop portraits of cultural idols, consistently includes audacious colors and overlaid, elaborate illustrations \u2013 these elements connect his work throughout the decades.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Wild One Marlon Brando\" href=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Wild-Ones-Ride-American-Motorcycles-sm.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3398\" title=\"The Wild Ones Ride American Motorcycles\" src=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Wild-Ones-Ride-American-Motorcycles-sm-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Wild-Ones-Ride-American-Motorcycles-sm-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/The-Wild-Ones-Ride-American-Motorcycles-sm.jpg 471w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a>Palm Springs\u2019 Gallery 446 is showing this collection of pop portraits during the much-anticipated Modernism Week, as the vivid nature of this work complements the inherently dazzling and star-studded city of Palm Springs. Curated by art consultant Eddie Donaldson, <strong><em>MODERNISM: The Art of the Pop Portrait 1984-1989<\/em><\/strong> opens on Saturday, February 7th and is on view until March 8th and if you want to meet the artist himself and delve into his multifarious mind, Jim Evans will be at Gallery 446 on the evening of February 14th for the artist reception.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>MODERNISM: The Art of the Pop Portrait 1984-1989<\/em><\/strong> includes not only the large-scale original paintings within this collective body of work (not seen together since 1989), but also framed and unframed one-of-a-kind signed serigraphs and limited edition prints produced with Duardo himself, the founder of Modern Multiples, who passed away unexpectedly last November.
