BLOG <br>LOLLAPALOOZA 1993 &#8211; A Look Back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s take a flannel-filled trip to the early \u201890s. A resplendent moment in time filled with Doc Martens, the invention of the Walkman and the inception of the internet, the release of Pearl Jam\u2019s second album, Vs., and, yes, hallelujah, the third incarnation of Perry Farrell\u2019s travelling music festival, the legendary LOLLAPALOOZA. Arguably one of the <a title=\"SPIN Magazine Best #1: 1993\" href=\"http:\/\/www.spin.com\/articles\/lollapalooza-best-worst-lineups-ever\/?slide=5\" target=\"_blank\">very best Lollapalooza line-ups ever,<\/a> according to both Jim Evans and SPIN Magazine, the 1993 concert included such 1990\u2019s phenom headliners as Dinosaur Jr., Alice in Chains, Primus, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Front 242, and Arrested Development.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Lollapalooza-1993-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3102\" title=\"TAZ Lollapalooza 1993\" src=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Lollapalooza-1993-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Lollapalooza-1993-sm.jpg 402w, https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Lollapalooza-1993-sm-209x300.jpg 209w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>TAZ, working with Farrell, Marc Geiger (Lollapalooza co-founder, current head of William Morris Endeavor\u2019s music division and agent for the likes of David Byrne, Lady Gaga, and Jack White, among so many others) and Goldenvoice, created the 1993 concert\u2019s posters and art.<\/p>\n<p>TAZ not only created the poster (shown below), but also a series of giant cartoon panels as part of a traveling art show (shown below)&#8211; a comic story titled \u201cHot Rod to Hell,\u201d it conveyed the concept of Lollapalooza via graphics: \u201cCrazy kids living to a wild rock and roll beat\u201d and \u201cA circus with a scent of evil.\u201d In a recent interview with Primus guitarist Larry LaLonde in <a title=\"Primus &amp; Rage Against The Machine Members Look Back At Lollapalooza 1993\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alternativenation.net\/primus-and-rage-against-the-machine-members-look-back-at-lollapalooza-1993\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alternative Nation<\/a>, he aptly and succinctly describes the Lollapalooza 1993: \u201cIt was just a crazy atmosphere\u2014Lollapalooza was kind of a new thing then . . . The L\u2019Imagerie TAZ booth was manned by (at that time) upcoming and relatively unknown poster artist EMEK, now a close friend of Jim Evans\u2019s and a massively successful and celebrated artist EMEK, wearing a blue polo shirt and shades, can be seen smirking in the booth\u2019s background.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/lollapalooza-1993-Photo-2-sm.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3122\" title=\"Exhibit Crew\" src=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/lollapalooza-1993-Photo-2-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/lollapalooza-1993-Photo-2-sm.jpg 504w, https:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/lollapalooza-1993-Photo-2-sm-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since these halcyon days of 1993, EMEK has become known as \u201cthe thinking man\u2019s poster artist,\u201d creating posters for the Beastie Boys, B.B. King, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, and so many other alternative and punk musicians, and, in 2007, had his work listed among Billboard\u2019s top 25 rock posters of all time.<\/p>\n<h6>December 9, 2014<\/h6>\n<h5><em>November 24, 2014<br \/>\n<\/em>The Story of SAW and TAZ<br \/>\n<em style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><strong>The SAW and TAZ adventure is one that goes a decade deep.<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/clown_saw4-sm1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SAW Clown\" src=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/clown_saw4-sm1-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>\u00a0For this famously gruesome horror film, Jim Evans\/TAZ brought the iconic, devilishly cruel clown puppet to life in his chilling poster interpretation for the film\u2019s initial release back in 2004.\u00a0 From that day onward, this familiar, rather terrifying image of the SAW clown became enmeshed in pop culture &#8211; emblazoned across t-shirts, hoodies, tanks, and, of course, posters.<\/p>\n<p>Working with Lionsgate Films\u2019 &#8230;.. <a title=\"TAZ - The Story of SAW and TAZ\" href=\"www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/rock-gig\/taz-blog-the-story-of-saw\/\"><strong><em>read more<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: normal;\" title=\"Jim Evans of TAZ\" href=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/search\/?keywords=TAZ\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jim in Studio SM\" src=\"http:\/\/www.limitedruns.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Jim-in-Studio-SM1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"336\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Jim Evans, founder of the T.A.Z. collaboration, which created hundreds of rock gig posters, record sleeves, and rock ephemera,\u00a0has been working on new posters including his recent double sided Limited Edition signed and numbered T.A.Z. When Paramount called and told me about their idea for the Legend of the Yokai, I got pretty excited.
