Epic Battle: The Undead VS Zombie Apocalypse

by Pierre Vudrag on Wednesday, October 22, 2014

With the explosive Season 5 opener of The Walking Dead the continued success of the soap-operatic Vampire Diaries and of course the big screen release of Dracula Untold, zombies, vampires and the King of the Undead: Dracula are still in the public conscious and dominating the small and big screens.  With so much attention to the hooro of all things undead, we decided to look at vintage and some more recent film art to see who’ll win this epic battle between the Undead and the Zombie Apocalypse.

While not the first screen vampire, Bela Lugosi’s 1931 portrayal of Dracula is certainly the most iconic.  This is a 2011 redeign by the incredible Martin Ansin for the Almo Drafthouse series.  The screenprint is from a numbered edition of 350 is signed and numbered by Ansin.

Then there is the classic film that started it all 1968’s Night of the Living Dead by George A. Romero.  Again, not the first as we’ll soon see but Romero’s vision of the zombie apocalypse defined the genre which is still evident is you’re a fan of Tthe Walking Dead, spawned so many sequels and remakes it’s hard to keep count.

The classic F. W. Murnau, Nosferatu starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok was masterfully reworked in the 1979 remake Nosferatu The Vampyre directed by Werner Herzog and starring Klaus Kinski as the vampire. This Polish A1 poster designed by Zygmunt Zaradklwicz is one of the darkest and most frightening of all posters created for the film.

Producer Val Lewton and director Jacques Tourneur brought us an early zombie film in 1943 with I Walked With A Zombie.  This three sheet is from the 1952 re-release of the film.

We’ll leave ot to you to decide who will win the epic battle between these two dark forces, but which ever way you go, stay safe this halloween season and make sure to protect yourself from the apocalypse.
